Maldives: Real Bargains Do Exist

By Skander EssidJanuary 20, 20267 min read

The Myth of Unaffordable Maldives

When people think of the Maldives, they imagine overwater villas at €2,000 per night, €500 seaplane transfers and €200-per-person dinners with feet in the sand. This world exists — but it represents only a fraction of the Maldives' hotel offerings.

Reality is more nuanced. The Maldives has over 160 resorts across 26 atolls. Alongside ultra-luxury palaces, dozens of 4 and 5-star resorts offer complete all-inclusive packages for €150-300 per person per night. That's less than a good hotel in Paris or Dubai.

The Three Keys to Saving

1. Choose the Right Time

Peak season in the Maldives runs from December through April (dry season). Prices are at their highest. Low season, from May to November, offers 30-50% discounts. Contrary to popular belief, the Maldivian monsoon isn't continuous downpour. It consists of short tropical showers, often in the evening, followed by clear skies. Underwater visibility is actually better on some atolls in low season thanks to plankton attracting manta rays.

2. Prioritize Speedboat Over Seaplane

Seaplane transfers from Malé cost €300-600 per person return. Resorts accessible by speedboat (within 90 minutes of Malé) eliminate this surcharge. Speedboat is often included in the rate or charged €100-150 return. This is the most impactful difference on total budget.

3. Go All-Inclusive

In the Maldives, each resort is an isolated island. There's no alternative for dining: you're captive to the hotel restaurant. Without all-inclusive, meals can easily reach €100 per person per day. All-inclusive turns an unpredictable budget into a fixed one, and it's often more economical overall.

Our Budget-Friendly Recommendations

Cocoon Maldives

Designed by Italian designer Lago, Cocoon proves that a 5-star Maldives resort can be affordable. Beach villas start around €200 per night all-inclusive in low season. The house reef is exceptional — you swim with turtles 50 meters from your villa. Speedboat transfer from Malé takes 30 minutes.

Sun Island Resort

With over 400 rooms, Sun Island is one of the Maldives' largest resorts. Its size enables competitive rates starting at €130 per night on half-board. The beach is immense, the lagoon turquoise, and the island large enough for genuine walks — a rare luxury in the Maldives.

Adaaran Club Rannalhi

Just 30 minutes by speedboat from Malé, Rannalhi eliminates seaplane transfer costs. Its all-inclusive package covers meals, drinks and several water activities. Overwater bungalows start around €180 per night in low season. The reef is accessible by swimming from the beach.

Bandos Maldives

A historic resort opened in 1972, Bandos offers an authentic charm that flashy new resorts lack. Its proximity to Malé (15 minutes by speedboat) drastically reduces transfer costs. The dive center is one of the country's most reputed, with sites reachable by boat in under 10 minutes.

The Real Cost of a Maldives Stay

For a week for two at a 4-5 star all-inclusive resort with speedboat transfers included, expect €2,000-4,000 total in low season. By comparison, a week at a good all-inclusive Mediterranean resort costs €1,500-3,000. The gap is smaller than you'd think.

Expert Tip

Book 4-6 months ahead for low season (May-November) and filter results by "speedboat transfer" on Bednight. Early bird discounts combined with low season can cut prices by 50% versus standard peak rates. Affordable Maldives is above all about timing and smart resort selection.
