Why Price Should No Longer Be Your Only Criterion

By Skander EssidFebruary 20, 20266 min read

The Story of Marc and His "Perfect" Hotel

Marc booked a 4-star hotel in Marrakech. Unbeatable price: €65 per night, the cheapest in its category. The photos showed a sparkling pool, a sumptuous lobby, a generous buffet. On paper, the deal of a lifetime.

On arrival, reality was different. The pool was closed for "maintenance." The room overlooked a construction site. Breakfast was limited to white bread and instant coffee. Wi-Fi only worked in the lobby. Marc spent five frustrated days.

The neighboring hotel, at €95 per night — just €30 more — offered everything Marc was actually looking for. But his usual comparator's price sort had pushed that hotel to page 3.

The Price Sort Trap

Traditional comparators rank hotels by price by default. It seems logical: travelers want to save money. But this ranking creates a dangerous bias. The cheapest hotels appear first, regardless of the experience quality they offer.

A hotel can show a low price for many reasons: noisy location, outdated facilities, minimal service, or simply because it cuts corners on everything that makes a difference — breakfast, pool maintenance, linen replacement.

The result: millions of travelers choose the cheapest option and leave disappointed. Not because of the price, but because the criteria that truly mattered to them were invisible.

Bednight's 37 Criteria

At Bednight, we identified 37 real experience criteria across 7 categories: environment, wellness and sport, dining, comfort and practical, family, budget and business. These criteria cover everything that makes the difference between an adequate stay and a memorable one.

Every traveler is unique. A honeymoon couple doesn't seek the same things as a family with three kids or a consultant on a business trip. Our Priorities tool lets you rank these criteria by personal importance, and results adapt accordingly.

Hotels Worth Their Price

La Mamounia, Marrakech

At €365 per night, La Mamounia is far from a budget hotel. But its 9.6/10 experience score justifies every euro. Soothing century-old gardens, exceptional spa, sumptuous breakfast, impeccable service. Guests who stay there never talk about the price — they talk about the experience.

Riad Yasmine, Marrakech

Conversely, Riad Yasmine proves that a moderate price can deliver an extraordinary experience. Its famous green pool, exceptional calm in the heart of the medina and homemade Moroccan breakfast earn it an 8.9/10 score at a third of La Mamounia's rate.

Park Hyatt, Bangkok

The Park Hyatt Bangkok perfectly illustrates the concept of intelligent value for money. For the price of a 3-star Parisian hotel, you get an Asian 5-star with infinity pool, spa, included breakfast and an unmatched level of service.

How to Use Bednight Differently

Instead of sorting by price, try this approach: define your 3 to 5 essential priorities in our Priorities tool. Let Bednight rank hotels according to your profile. Then compare prices only among hotels that match your criteria. You might pay a bit more, but you'll never be disappointed again.

Expert Tip

True savings isn't about paying as little as possible — it's about not wasting money on a disappointing stay. A €90 hotel where everything is perfect is a better deal than a €60 hotel that makes you wish you'd chosen the other one. Invest in your real priorities.
