Phuket vs Koh Samui: Which Thai Island to Choose

By BednightApril 7, 20267 min read

The Ultimate Thai Dilemma

Phuket and Koh Samui are Thailand's two island jewels, but comparing them is like comparing Paris and Lyon — same country, different universes. Phuket, the kingdom's largest island, offers an extraordinarily wide palette of experiences. Koh Samui, more compact and gentler, banks on tropical charm and wellness.

This guide will help you choose based on your travel style, budget, and timing. Our Bednight Beach and Calm scores reveal differences that tourist brochures don't show.

Size and Geography: Two Different Scales

Phuket covers 543 km², roughly the size of Singapore. The island is connected to the mainland by a bridge and has a major international airport with direct flights from Europe, the Middle East, and all of Asia. You'll find everything here: from the packed beaches of Patong to the deserted coves of the north, from Buddhist temples to modern shopping malls.

Koh Samui is three times smaller (228 km²) and remains a true island — you arrive by plane (flights from Bangkok) or ferry from Surat Thani. This relative difficulty of access is actually an asset: it filters mass tourism and preserves a more authentic atmosphere.

The Beaches: Spectacle vs Serenity

Phuket's beaches are among the most photographed in the world. Patong Beach is the epicenter of activity, with its bars, restaurants, and water sports. Kata and Karon offer a good balance between action and peace. But the real treasures hide in the northwest: Nai Thon, Layan, and Bang Tao are stretches of golden sand lined with casuarina trees where calm still reigns.

Koh Samui shines through its gentle waters. Chaweng Beach is the longest and liveliest, but Bophut (Fisherman's Village) and Maenam charm with their character. Lamai offers an excellent compromise. Samui's beaches are generally less dramatic than Phuket's, but the water is warmer and calmer — ideal for families with young children.

Nightlife and Entertainment

Phuket is southern Thailand's party capital. Bangla Road in Patong is a spectacle in itself, with its neon lights, clubs, and overflowing energy. But nightlife isn't limited to Patong: Surin and Kamala offer more sophisticated beach clubs, and Phuket Old Town is filled with trendy cocktail bars in former Sino-Portuguese shophouses.

Koh Samui is more laid-back in the evening. Chaweng has its bars and clubs, but the atmosphere remains more relaxed than Patong. Beach clubs in Bophut and Lipa Noi focus on sunset sessions with DJs and cocktails, rather than decibels. If you crave intense nightlife, Phuket is your destination. If you'd rather sip a mojito with your feet in the sand watching the sun disappear, Samui is made for you.

Wellness and Well-being

This is where Koh Samui gets its revenge. The island has established itself as Southeast Asia's wellness capital. From yoga retreats in Lamai to detox centers in Chaweng Noi and holistic spas in Bophut, Samui attracts travelers seeking regeneration. Six Senses Samui embodies this philosophy with its Integrated Wellness program combining traditional Thai medicine with modern technologies.

Phuket isn't far behind, with world-class spas like the Banyan Tree's, but wellness is a complement to your stay there, not its essence. If your trip centers on well-being, Samui is the obvious choice.

Our Recommended Hotels

Amanpuri — Phuket

Opened in 1988, Amanpuri was the very first Aman resort, and it remains one of the brand's most beautiful. Its teak pavilions are scattered through a coconut grove on the Pansea peninsula. The private beach is a white-sand crescent facing the Andaman Sea. The Bednight Calm score reaches 9.3/10 — a feat for Phuket. The entry price is steep (from €800 per night), but the experience is transcendent.

Six Senses Samui — Koh Samui

Perched on a wooded hillside in the island's north, Six Senses Samui combines discreet luxury with environmental consciousness. Each villa has an infinity pool overlooking the Gulf of Thailand. The spa is one of Asia's most renowned, and the personalized wellness program makes the difference. Bednight Beach score: 8.7/10. Calm score: 9.1/10.

Banyan Tree Phuket — Phuket

The Banyan Tree occupies a unique site: a private lagoon surrounded by tropical gardens in Bang Tao Bay. Its pool villas offer total privacy, and the spa — with treatments inspired by Asian traditions — is legendary. It's the quintessential premium family resort in Phuket, with an award-winning kids club and activities for all ages.

Seasons and Monsoon: When to Go

This is where geography changes everything. Phuket and the Andaman coast receive monsoon rains from May to October, peaking in September. The best period runs from November to March — blue skies, calm seas, bearable humidity.

Koh Samui, on the Gulf of Thailand, has a shifted calendar. Its monsoon hits from October to December, with November as the wettest month. The best months are January through April. This means that if you're traveling in July or August, Koh Samui is often the better choice because the gulf coast escapes the worst of the summer monsoon.

Budget: Real Differences

Koh Samui is generally 10 to 20% more expensive than Phuket for equivalent accommodation, mainly because of the airline duopoly (Bangkok Airways controls the majority of flights). Airport transfers are also pricier. However, local dining costs are similar on both islands.

If you're traveling on a tight budget, Phuket offers more entry-level choices. If your budget is comfortable and you're seeking premium, both islands are on par.

Our Verdict

Phuket for diversity, accessibility, and nightlife. Koh Samui for wellness, intimacy, and island charm. Both islands are beautiful and worth the trip — the question is which version of Thailand you're looking for.
